About Lawns...

 When should I water?

It's a good idea to water your lawn within a day or two after an application. This dissolves the fertilizer and makes it more readily available to grass plants. The best time to water your lawn is during the day (especially mornings). Watering at night can encourage turfgrass diseases. However, during periods of hot weather, water early or late in the day. During hot sunny conditions, mid day watering can burn the lawn.

 How should I water?

Ideally, a lawn needs one inch of water per week during the growing season. Be sure to give your lawn enough water to reach the roots of the grass plants. A light watering will be of little benefit. A good rule of thumb is to water approximately 30 to 40 minutes in each sprinkler location.

 How should I mow?

Every lawn needs to be mowed regularly. Frequency should be determined by the rate of growth of the grass, and not by a set date. Mow your lawn at a height of 2 - 3 inches. Close mowing can damage a lawn. Keep the blade of the mower shapened, as a dull blade shreds the grass and can make your lawn more susceptible to diseases. Mow the lawn at a height of 3 inches during the summer, and 2 inches for the winter.

Why do I have crabgrass even though I have a lawn service?

If you have existing crabgrass, it can re-seed itself, as it is an annual grass. It can flourish in thin or bare areas of the lawn and along edges of drives and walks, where heat from the sun reflects higher temperatures and stimulates its growth. Crabgrass control can be washed through the soil by heavy rain as in the spring of 1999 and 2000.

A lawn service and the customer must remain vigilant and aggressive in the treatment of crabgrass to keep it controlled!

 When is an insecticide needed?

Insects generally do the most damage during dry spells when lawns burn and dry up. Since insect damage often looks the same as a dry lawn, it can easily go undetected until the lawn greens back up. The areas affected will remain brown and may require repair.

Insect problems are unsightly, costly to repair, and overall a nuisance.

About Applications

Do I have to be home?

No. Most of our lawns are serviced during normal working hours. Unless otherwise instructed, your applicator will complete his work and leave a billing along with the application information at your door.

What if it rains after an application?

Rain is beneficial following a fertilizer, crabgrass, or insect control application. If it rains following a broad leaf weed application (for dandelions, etc.), give the product 10 - 14 days to work. If at this time the weeds do not begin to shrivel and fade away, give us a call and we'll come back to re-spray. We use a spreader sticker in all of our liquid applications which helps significantly if rain occurs following the application. Service spray requests after fourteen days will be denied.

Can I mow my lawn after an application?

Yes, but wait 2 to 3 hours first. We recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours following an application to mow.

Do we have to stay off the lawn?

Yes. Everyone, including pets, must stay off the lawn for 24 hours following an application.

When is my application scheduled to be done?

The approximate schedule follows. These are approximate dates: the actual service dates will be scheduled to best meet the current weather conditions to give you the best results:

  • Application #1: March 25 - May 10 (may be as late as mid-June)
  • Application #2: April 15 - June 1 (or anytime/multiple times through season)
  • Application #3: June 1 - July 1
  • Application #4: July 1 - July 31
  • Application #5: August 1 - September 15
  • Application #6: September 1 - October 15
  • Application #7: October 1 - November 15

Applications may overlap the dates indicated, so please give our applicators time to perform within the above dates before contacting our office!

Why were applications #1 and #2 done at the same time?

Application #1 is an all granular fertilizer application only. Application #2 is a liquid herbicide application only containing a state of the art pre-emergent and post-emergent crabgrass control as well as broadleaf weed control. These two applications are entirely different from one another and may need to be done at the same time, depending on the condition of your lawn, weather conditions, the presence of weeds in your lawn or timing within the season. This is done at the discretion of the Lawn Systems applicator, and you will be charged for the two separate applications you receive.

The crabgrass control we use is post-emergent and pre-emergent - we are aware of the timing to apply it and are not too late in doing so even if the crabgrass has germinated.

What is a potassium or dormant treatment?

Potassium is usually a 0-0-60 or 0-0-50 treatment. It is a supplement which enhances the weed and feed program you have had during the season.

Potassium helps prepare the lawn for winter by developing stronger roots. This is an essential macro-nutrient which helps in water uptake. This can prompt an earlier, greener lawn in the spring.

The dormant treatment is also a supplemental winterizer with excellent winter and early spring benefits. Composition is usually 0-14-42. Dormant treatments can be applied anytime from late fall through the winter months when there is approximately 1" of snow or less.

 What is a gypsum treatment?

Gypsumis beneficial for compacted soils, lawns with poor quality soil, or not enough topsoil.

Cypsum is applied anytime during the season and can be applied one to three times during the season. The benefit usually occurs during the following season.

Benefits include:

  • Moisture retention within the lawn is better, thus reducing burn out during hot, dry spells.
  • Reduces compaction, promoting better root growth thus resulting in a more vigorous and healthy grass plant.
